A little bit about Janice Saffir Janice Saffir was recently selected as the 2009 CSMTA Concert Artist in Piano, and she performed as a soloist and gave a master class at the State Conference in June, 2009 in Northglenn, Colorado. Dr. Saffir has retired from her position as Professor of Piano at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri. She received her Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Piano Performance from the University of Illinois, and her Doctor of Music Arts Degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Iowa. Her early training in Chicago was with Herman Spier of the American Conservatory; her other teachers included Stanley Fletcher, Joel Shapiro, William Heiles, and Kenneth Amada. She performs solo, chamber and vocal music and has appeared in collaboration with many performers, including recording artists such as violinist Robert McDuffie, trumpeter Allan Dean, and Swiss cellist Markus Stocker. Dr. Saffir's students have won competitions and performed with regional and professional orchestras. Her teaching style is made distinctive by encouraging her students to learn the elements of interpretation along with technique and relaxation so as to develop an independent musical personality. Dr. Saffir serves regularly as a clinician and adjudicator. |
